DS4 controllers keep dieing.

I bought my PS4 last May (I think), and my original controller lasted me about 7 months before essentially giving up the ghost.  The battery stopped holding as much charge as it used to, until it eventually completely gave up the ghost.  I attempted a battery replacement on my own, and had no luck ($11 out the window).  I then went and just bought a brand new controller from Walmart and I'm thankful now that I paid for the replacement plan because my new controller just now gave up the ghost and won't charge anymore.

My very first controller I thought I may have killed it because I charged it with my Nexus 6 charger, which I know cranks up the voltage the charge the battery on my phone longer.  Perhaps I killed the battery's internal fuse on that one by cranking up the current past what the fuse could take.  But on the second one, I was adamant about charging the controller only with the Playstation 4's USB ports on the front.  I made sure my wife did so too, but the thing just now gave up the ghost after only 3 months.  We're getting this controller replaced by Walmart (and the new one reinsured for sure), but I'd like if at all possible to figure out what the heck is going on and why my controllers keep dieing.

I'm thinking this time I'll buy an official controller charge station and hope that my controllers no longer crap out on me.  Has anyone else had an issue like this?  I'm tempted to think that it is the USB ports on the Playstation, but I don't have undeniable proof to send it in and fork out some money for Sony to fix it for me since I was a moron and didn't keep the receipt from when I purchased the Playstation.
