I bought a ps3 a few years ago and didnt think id take up my 120gb hard drive. Before i knew it my OS files and game data, saves and install data, and dlc took up all my space. I tried to replace the hdd with a higher capacity but i failed, ether the install media from playstations website would not detect or the hdd. I would get a error stating " cannot start. The appropriate system storage was not found." or a error stating it cant find the installation. I formatted my 16gb flash drive to fat32 and placed the respective folders ( PS3/UPDATE/UPDAT.PUP). I also formatted my new hdd to fat32 using a third party format software(windows limits fat32 to 32gb). I made sure the hdd was seated correctly many times. I followed all the proper steps to upgrade even followed youtube videos of people doing the same thing, but they got theres to work unlike mine. I looked into upgrading my hard drive in my console to a seagate momentus 5400rpm ( i hear rumor of 7200rpm hdd buring up not sure if its true i hear it got both ways) with 8m cache and 1TB of space. I checked out various forums and specs for ps3 units and hard drive devices and heard you could use a limited number of brands. Toshiba, seagate, western digital, and a few others seemed to be the most used, but i have not found anything from sony themselves stating accepted kinds up to 1TB. Is there something im missing? A possible tiny commenly overlooked detail? Is the hdd not supported? Is there a size limit? Maybe i need to try a different brand of hdd? Ive been trying to upgrade my console since june of 2015 with no avail. I researched into this a lot and havent found anyone else with a similar hdd and issue. So im not sure where to begin troubleshooting my issues. I know this was lengthy but i wanted to detail as much as i can, if needed i can supply more info on the topic. Thank you for your time to read this, i hope i can get this fixed.
