Hello fellow gamers!!!
I just want to offer a quick word of warning to those thinking of buying a PlayStation Gold Wireless Stereo Headset (any of them). This is regarding the Gold headset only, I do not own a Silver set so I cannot speak to those.
December 2014 I get a PS Gold headset as a gift from my wife. These are great headphones (to start with). Sound is amazing, integration with the PS4 App is sweet. So why the warning?
Fast forward 8 months. I happen to notice a small crack in the hinge area of the headset. Odd as I am very careful with these (they are not cheap... to buy). Two days later the right earpiece breaks off at the hinge. I contact Sony and after a horrible experience with their Chat personnel I finally just call the support phone number (lesson learned there). I get the device replaced under warranty (I paid for shipping... not a problem). Get the new headset a few days later. Thanks PlayStation!!!
Fast forward 5 months. The hinge is breaking on the new set now too. Two sets in less than a year and a half. Contact PS Support via Chat (cause I did not learn my lesson the first time) and get told they will not assist in any way because the original purchase was over a year ago.
Check around the Internet. Search for PS Gold hinge cracks. The design features at metal rod held in place by thin plastic hinges where the earpieces fold in (for travel and storage). This point is a primary stress point when putting on or taking off the headset, not to mention wearing them. This is the part that has failed now twice. PlayStation offers no support and the Chat team is quick to quote policy and refuse to escalate.
Sony, I am a long time supporter and really enjoy most of your products. These PlayStation Gold Headsets should be recalled, redesigned, and refunded/replaced. For what they are designed for they cannot physically stand up to daily use.
