PS4 no longer connects to modem (it used to!)

So I recently moved from upstate NY to Charlotte NC. Back in NY when I would play destiny I always plugged my Ethernet cable directly into the ps4 from the modem, instead of from the modem to router to ps4. I would lose my wifi for the apartment, but my NAT type would be a 1 this way (always 2 if I went through the router). Connection was always great. Never had issues. Now that I'm in NC the ps4 no longer connects to the Internet when plugged directly into the modem. I can connect if it goes through the router, but my connection is significantly worse now. Like 70% of the time I'm red bar connection in game. I lag out constantly and get dropped from the game and Internet entirely. I would have to power cycle the modem, router, and ps4 to reconnect. And lately, it's been having connectivity issues reconnecting after a power cycle so I'm resetting everything 5 times before it finally gets Internet again. Needless to say this makes playin Destiny very difficult. Any ideas as to what's happening and how to fix it? I thought it could be modem related, but when I purchased it, it was on time warners list of comparable modems. I'm still with time warner down in NC as well. I did a quick Google search for time warner compatible modems last night but it did not appear to be listed anymore. the modem and router are 2 years old.
